Starboy: Legend of the Fall Tour

The Weeknd

The Weeknd’s kinetic installation for Starboy: Legend of the Fall Tour was a stunning, larger-than-life Star Destroyer that articulated above the stage, lighting up and changing directions throughout the show.

In collaboration with the production team, TAIT fabricated the kinetic installation and provided staging and automation. Thank you to our partners: Production Manager, Rob Deceglio; Set Designer, Es Devlin; and Lighting Designer, Sooner Routhier.

Made of ten independent, aluminum triangles, ranging from 10 ft. to 20 ft. in length, and six automated electric trusses, The Weeknd’s kinetic installation moved vertically, horizontally, tilted and rolled to mimic the aesthetic appeal of a flight path. To give the Star Destroyer a clean, monolithic look, each triangle had its own custom fascia and grey fabric lining, which video content projected onto throughout the show.

Hanging from 50 Nav Hoists, this cutting-edge kinetic installation relied on TAIT Navigator, an automation software platform, to support its infinite movements and provide real-time positioning, ensuring projections were mapped to the structure accurately. Additionally, TAIT built The Weeknd’s 136 ft. long main stage and runway, which ran in parallel to the Star Destroyer kinetic installation.
